Astronauts Sunita “Suni” Williams and Barry “Butch” Wilmore were only supposed to be on the International Space Station for 10 days, but due to spacecraft malfunctions, they may not be in orbit until February 2025.
Some dirty-minded people are now speculating whether astronauts can have sex in space to pass the time?
It might sound cool to be able to say you’ve done what no one else has done – and while it’s technically possible, it’s probably not something you’ll be drawn to.
According to experts there would be many logistical issues to overcome, including zero-gravity rotation.
John Millis, a physicist and astronomer, told The Sun Online in 2018 that having sex in space is comparable to having sex while “skydiving” – but it’s not “impossible”.
“The issues surrounding the act all revolve around free fall, micro-gravity, the environment experienced by astronauts,” he said at the time. “Imagine engaging in sexual activity while skydiving—every push or shove will push you in opposite directions.”
“Even the lightest touch can make it difficult to stay in touch if both people are not properly anchored. Astronauts will have to fortify themselves against the space station and even against each other.”
It’s also harder for men and women to get aroused since blood rises to your head instead of your genitals in micro-gravity, Millis explained.
Sex in space can be incredibly difficult for men as low blood pressure causes the tissue in a man’s penis to shrink and testosterone levels also drop in space.
The lack of gravity can also contribute to a variety of fluids – such as sweat, vaginal moisture and semen – floating around the cabin.
NASA technician Harry Stine claimed in his book Life in Space that gravity-defying sex is possible, but would be made “easier when a third person helps by holding one of the others in the country”.
“This could be a jungle-type apparatus that allows people to position themselves appropriately in a belt system that holds them together or clothing that accomplishes the same thing,” Millis previously told Glamor . Imaginative minds will create something genius, I’m sure.”
Paul Root Wolpe, a former NASA bioethicist, told DW that “you’re going to have to get creative in this space.”
“Everything on the walls of the space station is covered with Velcro, so you can take advantage of that by attaching a partner to the wall,” suggested Wolpe.
“We don’t realize how much gravity helps us in the act of intercourse,” he added. “Sex involves pressure. In space, without any counterforce, you end up constantly pushing your partner away from you.”
In addition, Dr. Adam Watkins, associate professor of reproductive and developmental physiology at the University of Nottingham, told MailOnline that the privacy of doing so is also a concern.
“Sex in space is physically possible, but it wouldn’t be as easy as here on Earth,” Watkins said.
